A larger than life character from the "Jesus files" who in his day to day life in Jerusalem first century AD, is often a first-hand eye-witness of the teachings, miracles and ministries of Jesus Christ, aswell as His interactions with others, people whom Perez often knows.
Perez is first met, with his characteristic 'little green hat', unusual admixture accent
These words cut Perez to the core - convicting him of his dishonest and opportunistic money making scam. Weeping and throwing his pouch of money and himself to the ground, he turns away from his old life, and dedicates himself to following Jesus around. A new business venture opens up to him as well, "Perez' Perfect Pita-bread".
Many and varied interactions have taken place.
The tax collector Matthew had his booth opposite Perez' Perfect Pita-bread stall and took an interest in finding extra and new taxes to impose on Perez, including a "Cute Little Green Hat tax". The final straw was the GST (the Greek Salad tax) that Matthew imposed on Perez. On the day that Perez had determined to have a showdown with Matthew, was the day Matthew was called to follow Christ (Matthew 9v9). Instead of a showdown, Perez discovered a deserted tax booth, and a pouch of money on his stall with an apology
Stavros, the fruiter friend of Perez dropped by to explain some parables of Jesus, as well as Jacob (the ladder maker) and Jimopolous (Oppy to his friends). A fiery interaction occured with the Pharisee Shamuel, after Christ's statement of His deity and mission.
Perez is no scholar.
But he is a thinker.
Often the words of Jesus do confuse him, but that has never put him off from thinking over and pondering Christ's words. He is a living example of Paul's encouragement to Timothy
Often surprising parallel stories are relayed from Perez' family - that make Perez think that Jesus has used his family as a basis for many of the parables. Perez' uncles' cousin, Herez, and the accident with new wine in old wine skins being one such example.
A disturbing new happening has been Perez bursting into song with a rendition of Colin Buchanan's, "Two men were their houses a'building".
Always greeting with the same words "Hello my little lambs, how are you today?" Perez has very much become part of the fabric of the Branches.
